Tytuł : The Impact of Using the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) Account for a Reusable Wooden Flat Pallet in Its Operational Phase on Respecting the Principles of Sustainable Development

Autor/Autorzy: Mariusz Jedliński, Mariusz Sowa

Miejsce publikacji: Resources-Basel

Rok: 2021

Słowa kluczowe: sustainable development, Logistic Infrastructure, wooden pallets pool, pallet management, total cost of ownership, sustainable principle

Abstrakt: Despite the commonly observed trend towards mechanization and automation of operational processes, the potential benefits of wooden pallets as an essential element of the infrastructure of logistic processes are often overlooked in considerations related to sustainable development. Aspects that are mentioned more often include the very idea of the economy itself (circular economy), characteristics of logistics (green), features of the supply chain itself (sustainable) or expectations towards transport (ecological). The authors believe that the idea of total cost of ownership (TCO) in relation to wooden pallets can be a key component of holistic thinking in terms of sustainable development. In a situation where in relation to logistics, reasonable expectations for developing sustainable supply chains are made, paying attention to such a common logistic facility, namely a cargo pallet, which is given so little attention in research, is, in the opinion of the authors, absolutely justified. Therefore, the article presents an original approach to the problem of aggregation of all costs that cargo pallets generate in their operational life cycle, using the total cost of ownership (TCO) analysis methodology. The main goal of the article, however, is to show that the total cost of ownership of a pallet (not only owning it) can become an effective tool used to significantly reduce the costs of logistic activity of enterprises (as well as whole supply chains) and support the idea of sustainable development in practice. Using the primary data from questionnaire research, the focus was on considerations that were of identification character (cognitive and explanatory considerations), which are typical for basic research that aims to explain given phenomena. Thus, the presented cognitive process covers two main areas, namely: the general theory of sustainable development and the specificity of wooden pallets as carriers used in goods trading in terms of their total costs of ownership.

Tytuł : The Concept of the “Reverse Iceberg-RIB” in the Application of Account of Total Cost of Ownership for a Reusable Wooden Flat Pallet in its Operating Phase

Autor/Autorzy: Mariusz Jedliński, Mariusz Sowa

Miejsce publikacji: European Research Studies Journal

Rok: 2021

Słowa kluczowe: Logistic Infrastructure, Cost of Ownership, Reverse Iceberg (RIB)

Abstrakt: Purpose: The main aim of this article is to show that the total cost of ownership of a pallet (which is not restricted to simply owning it) can become both a useful philosophy for purchasing these logistic carriers and an effective tool used to significantly reduce the costs of logistic activity of enterprises. Approach/Methodology/Design: Key dimensions of competition in the logistics area include the so-called “golden triangle”, i.e., time, quality and costs, and that is why they require a revision of the way we consider them, especially in case of the last aspect. This article presents an original approach to the problem of examination of all possible costs that cargo pallets generate in their operational life cycle, using the concept of Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) as an analysis methodology and the survey method for the research sample. Findings: In the “reverse iceberg” model, obvious and non-obvious costs have been identified in individual groups of costs related to pallet ownership during its operating phase. Considerations undertaken in this article lead to an obvious conclusion that an attempt to implement an approach to this important element of logistic infrastructure, and one can undoubtedly consider wooden cargo pallets as such, from the angle of account of costs allows to find grounds for taking real action leading to a significant reduction of costs of logistic activity in an enterprise. Practical Implications: The article employs a comprehensive approach to the most complete analysis of cost groups as possible since the authors have adopted a stance that omission of the potential to reduce costs related to material logistics in which wooden pallets are used requires a different perspective. Originality/Value: Numerous authors point to different sources and types of costs, and also present different views on how to define, interpret and identify their structure. The authors of this article propose thinking in terms of TCO as an alternative to the conventional approach to pallet-related costs at the same time postulating a standpoint based on their own model of “inverted iceberg” (RIB).

Tytuł : Unfulfilled advantages of the lean supply chain against contemporary threats: a sketch of changes in the scientific approach

Autor/Autorzy: Mariusz Jedliński

Miejsce publikacji: Scientific Journals of the Maritime University of Szczecin-Zeszyty Naukowe Akademii Morskiej w Szczecinie

Rok: 2021

Słowa kluczowe: logistics, disorders-vulnerability-resilience, Lean Supply Chains vs Resilience Supply Chain

Abstrakt: The progressive unpredictability of socio-economic or biological changes (e.g. the SARS-CoV-2/COVID 19 pandemic), the multi-directional nature of their impact, the variability of intensity, and the uncertainty in estimating potential effects hinders the stable and planned operation of modern supply chains. This irreversible situation proves the high unreliability of existing traditional measuring instruments of classical economics and the methods used so far in the field of management and quality sciences. This article aims to present an exemplary set of expectations towards contemporary supply chains that are particularly relevant to the emerging market challenges in the form of mega-trends of threats and conditions, also those particularly emphasized during the SARS-CoV-2/COVID-19 pandemic. It is primarily a pandemic (taken as a critical exogenous factor) resulting in severe “disorders” in supply chains. The actual level of supply chain resilience depends on its inherent characteristics and is termed “vulnerabilities”, while an active supply chain response to emerging “disorders” is treated as its “resilience”. For these reasons, the author proposes a holistic view of the nature of the supply chain system and its processes. The proposed approach, based on the method of interpretative (qualitative) research enriched with the idiographic nomothetic approach, is treated as a creative alternative that does not exclude other possibilities of perception of the supply chain, but, in its intellectual diversity, complements other methods of understanding its system, processes, and logistics management. Such an approach with a dominant hypothetical-inductive character allows for creating a platform for broader scientific discussions, positioning itself in the sphere of simplifying reality or creating a theoretical construct for the possibility of formulating the foundations of the preliminary theory. These considerations lead to the conclusion that such an attempt at a new, broader perspective, both at the emerging threats and vulnerability, is related to the level of risk, demonstrating that the Supply Chain Critical Functionality is a consequence of many different factors, including time, costs, and delays in deliveries. Such a view allows for a more comprehensive systematization of the epistemological layer in the area of directional perception and application of logistics, showing many similarities but also significant differences with phenomena that are characteristic of other areas of logistics application and the perception of the conditions for the functioning of modern supply chains.

Tytuł : Efficiency of light electric vehicles in last mile deliveries - Szczecin case study

Autor/Autorzy: Stanisław Iwan, Mariusz Nürnberg, Mariusz Jedliński, Kinga Kijewska

Miejsce publikacji: Sustainable Cities and Society

Rok: 2021

Słowa kluczowe: city logistics, electromobility, urban freight transport, city sustainability, city users’s needs, transport system impact, electric freight vehicles

Abstrakt: City users gladly apply comfortable and time-saving e-commerce solutions as an alternative to traditional purchase. The present pandemic crisis made this issue even more important. It significantly increased the number of transport operations within the city area, as each order has to be delivered directly to the purchaser. Consequently, city authorities are confronted with the important challenge: how to fulfil the expectations and needs of city users in the context of transport system functioning in view of reducing the negative impacts of urban freight transport in terms of safety, air pollution or noise. This is one of the most important elements of social sustainability in cities. One of the solutions that help reduce the negative environmental impacts of urban freight transport is making use of vehicles that produce less air pollution, such as electric vans. It proved to be very effective in decreasing transportation footprint by reducing local emissions of e.g. PM or NOx. However, one of the key limitations is the potential short driving range of such vehicles, which results from the battery capacity and charging infrastructure availability. In recent years, some analyses related to that issue have been made. Nevertheless, the studies have taken into account passenger cars only. This paper presents the results of the research study aimed at verification of electric vans energy efficiency in real-life conditions, i.e. when delivering courier consignments. The electric van used for the purposes of the experiment was Nissan eNV200. This paper fulfils the important knowledge gap and could be helpful from both theoretical and practical perspectives. It should be emphasised that the experiment was carried out in real-life conditions, i.e. in the course of performing business processes in one of the worldwide known CEP companies. The research study was carried out under the EUFAL international project, funded under the Electric Mobility Europe programme. The results of the research shown high potential of electric vehicles and usefulness of electromobility in last mile deliveries. The business partner of the research is now on the stage of electric freight vehicles implementation into vehicles fleets.

Abstrakt: As an idea, Freight Quality Partnership (FQP) has been worked on for a few years. Though most successfully implemented in the United Kingdom, these init6iatives were also positively implemented in other countries, among others under projects such as C-LIEGE. Presently, absence of analyses related to the FQP results awareness from the different city logistics stakeholders’ perspective is observed. With almost 10 years of experience in developing the FQP in Szczecin, the Authors conclude that this issue is of critical importance for future sustainable development and improvement of such initiatives. The paper focuses on analysis of the key city logistics stakeholders’ environmental awareness in the context of projects implemented under the Freight Quality Partnership, based on the example of Szczecin (Poland). It is as the emanation of the social and economic priority – the sustainability concept. Based on the relevant literature review, the Authors made an attempt to identify the ecological utility of FQP activities. Further, the paper presents the results of a questionnaire-based research depicting levels of environmental awareness, manifested by various groups of UFT stakeholders in Szczecin. The research has been divided into two parts – the first focuses on internal FQP stakeholders (FQP members), and the second focuses on external FQP stakeholders (various city users and local authorities). The results show in what manner different stakeholders’ groups recognize and assess the FQP activities.

Tytuł: Smart „plan b” – in face with disruption of supply chains in 2020

Autor/Autorzy: Mariusz Jedliński, Łukasz Marzantowicz, Katarzyna Nowicka

Rok: 2020

Słowa kluczowe: supply chain risk management, COVID-19/SARS-CoV-2 impact on supply chain, digital technologies in risk mitigation

Abstrakt: ABSTRACT. Background: Competitive supply chain management is the ability not only to take corrective actions against the risk occurred, but above all prevents such a situation on a daily basis. Risk management is permanent element of management abilities and one of the most important factor impacting on supply chain resilience. Today managers have access to many tools, i.e. digital technologies, supporting the development of contingency plans (Plan B) for risk mitigation. The aim of the paper is to identify supply chain resilience in terms of risk management during the beginning of the COVID-19/SARS-CoV-2 pandemic spread in 2020. The most important factors impacting on supply chain flows stability are pointed here together with the assessment of their preparation for these flows disruption. Methods: The theoretical background is based on the literature review on disruption of supply chain management in general. The In-depth individual interview (IDI) method supported with questionnaire was used to conduct research among managers responsible for supply chain operations within the enterprises from the production, trade and services sectors in Poland. Opinions and a number of views on the impact of the coronavirus pandemic on business operations and supply chain management were obtained and analyzed. The survey was conducted in March 2020. Results: The results obtained show that the first phase of pandemic spread unexpectedly strongly and impacted on disruption in the supply chains. Closed borders, sanitary and administrative restrictions have leaded to transport delays, additionally the lower number of orders was noted causing many disruptions in the further flow of the goods. Surprisingly the disruption happened even when managers synergistically cooperate and share information among partners. Conclusions: Results of the research pointed out the critical problem with the lack of “Plan B” helping supply chains quickly react on disruptions occurring in the flows. Also managing risk based on the current way of sharing information is insufficient. Features of digital technologies and digitalization are currently one of the most important solution that might help to build smart “Plan B” for risk mitigation and supply chain competitiveness improvement.

Tytuł: The Concept of Urban Freight Transport Projects Durability and Its Assessment within the Framework of a Freight Quality Partnership

Autor/Autorzy: Mariusz Jedliński, Kinga Kijewska

Miejsce publikacji: Sustainability

Rok: 2018

Słowa kluczowe: logistics, urban freight transport, Freight Quality Partnership, project durability

Abstrakt: This article focuses on the role of Urban Freight Transport (UFT) projects in improving the life quality of city inhabitants. The main focus of the deliberations is the aspect of UFT projects’ durability. The authors take an original approach to the definition of UFT project durability and also provide the results of a research study carried out in 2018. This made it possible to furnish an answer to the research questions that boiled down to the analysis of the current status of the relevant academic literature, to attempt to define the total durability of a UFT project, and to indicate the critical gaps in perception among the key stakeholders of the projects. In this study, particular attention is paid to the terminological synthesis and the conclusion resulting from adopting induction and deduction as the methods of solving research study problems. A novelty is the approach adopted in the project evaluation emphasising the mentioned durability aspect as one of the major success factors. This is particularly important for implementation of a Freight Quality Partnership as a solution enabling development of sustainable systems of urban logistics. The solution was treated as a specific implementation project for which the issue of key importance is the identification of success factors in the context of satisfying the needs of diverse groups of UFT stakeholders. It should be stressed that durability of projects in the area of UFT is critically important, even though there is a significant conceptual gap in that regard. The research study involved the originally developed concept of the Pyramid of Stakeholders Survey. By means of this concept, FQP durability was analysed on the example of the experience gained in the course of the solution functioning in Szczecin.

Abstrakt: W artykule przedstawiono wyniki systematycznego przeglądu literatury dotyczącej problematyki wsparcia logistycznego działalności gospodarczej. Dokonano próby zdefiniowania pojęć wsparcia logistycznego i potencjału wsparcia logistycznego, jednocześnie porównania zakresu znaczeniowego tych pojęć z pojęciem zabezpieczenia logistycznego. Autorzy trwają bowiem w przekonaniu, iż w ekonomii pozytywnej weryfikatorem prawdziwości twierdzeń jest obiektywizm poznawczy badanej rzeczywistości logistycznej, w celu dokonania opisu związków i zależności pomiędzy potencjałem a wsparciem logistycznym.

Abstrakt: Background: Warehouse Production management systems now require IT aspects which can be automated, so that processes can be easily reviewed. During our research, we analyzed four and a half years of database and machine stock of 3 food companies. We have found that companies in this industry prefer process-based production. It is important that manufacturing companies pay close attention to the proper design of automation, the purpose of which is to acquire and maintain a competitive advantage through the efficient, rapid manufacture of products. The expansion of industrial robots has increased considerably (Figure 4.), increasing the productivity, accuracy and flexibility of manufacturing processes, and has enabled a number of business processes to be re-established and new business models brought to life. Methods: The two best time-oriented methods, the PERT and CPM analysis, were used to assess the individual stages of the production, which made estimates for the duration of the activities. When drawing the box graph, we extracted outlying data from the data set, so we obtained a more accurate statistical stimate. Using this, we made a recommendation for the expected completion of workflows, which is more accurate in determining delivery dates for sales orders. Analyzing the four-and-a-half year dataset, we determined, by using Student’s t-test, that the average of the sample elements in reality is different from the estimates we made. The PERT and CPM methods have proventhemselves in the past decades and continue to be of great value. The ever-changing business world and the high cost have an impact on the economy. Results: The production times of individual companies are influenced by the use of more modern machines and well-developed manufacturing plans and schedules. Using PERT and CPM methods, we’ve helped to better define production time, making it easier to calculate delivery dates correctly. Automation does not stop all occupations, but only triggers certain activities and redefines jobs. There is no doubt that the technological development of manufacturing processes will change the organization of the industries concerned and affect the geographic location of each activity. There is a serious chance that the production of these products will go elsewhere to save on shipping costs. Conclusions: During our analysis, we have found that new technologies have an impact on productivity, employment and the transformation of the geographic structure of value-added activities, that’s why their role is important both for food companies and companies operating in other industries. Automation is made possible by scientific achievements and technological advances that are used to develop industry 4.0 technologies. The huge amount of data produced in the Intelligent Production Systems (Big Data) analysis and on this basis, the continuous modification of production systems, results in significant material and labor saving, efficiency gains and productivity gains, which have an impact on employment and the transformation of geographic structures. Food processing and delivery to consumers is a key factor in the security of food supply, and therefore has an essential importance in the further development of the sector.

Tytuł monografii: City Logistics 2: Modeling and Planning Initiatives

Tytuł rozdziału monografii: Assumptions of Social Cost–Benefit Analysis for Implementing Urban Freight Transport Measures

Autor/Autorzy: Mariusz Jedliński, Izabela Kotowska, Stanisław Iwan, Kinga Kijewska

Rok: 2018

Słowa kluczowe: Social cost‐benefit analysis, urban freight transport, sustainable transport, city logistics

Abstrakt: Social cost‐benefit analysis (SCBA) aims to assess whether the planned solution will bring greater social benefits than the expenditure incurred. This chapter focuses on the assumptions of SCBA for implementing urban freight transport projects. Social benefits resulting from the introduction of individual solutions / best practice in city logistics are due to the reduction of external costs. Therefore, measurable social benefits are the difference in external costs generated before and after the introduction of the solution. External costs generated by urban freight transport are mostly environmental costs covering the cost of climate change, air pollution and noise and congestion costs associated with the increase in travel time and transport accidents. Determination of external costs requires a very detailed identification of the number of vehicles entering the area by type, capacity and Euro norm.
